Breeding soundness evaluations of stallions (BSE)
- Stallions regardless of their use should have a BSE performed. Whether it is for a pre-purchase, prior to the breeding season, to breed by artificial insemination (transported) or frozen, it is not wise to wait until problems arise with your own mares or with client mares. Two ejaculates collected in the same day very often will provide valuable information regarding the potential fertility of the stallion.
Stallion evaluation and management
- Frequency of collection, type of extenders and behavioral problems can affect the ability to use a stallion. At VRS we can do a thorough evaluation of your stallion and provide you with recommendations or guidelines to improve or maximize individual stallion s fertility. It is not uncommon to have some stallions with great genetic merit and poor semen that can be managed properly to achieve a good pregnancy rate . On the other hand it is common to have stallions with apparent good semen that have sub-optimal pregnancy rates. Proper diagnostics and management of these stallions can significantly improve their fertility.
Management of old and/or sub-fertile stallions
- As stallions age their semen quality tends to deteriorate. We can help you manage those stallions in order to prolong their fertile life.
Evaluation of semen and shipping of fresh cooled semen
- When you decide to offer your stallion in a cooled shipping program, it is important to optimize factors such as type of extender, shipping container and optimal frequency of collection. At VRS we can help you maximize the semen quality to avoid complaints from mare owners. Remember you are not only competing with genetics but service and semen quality.
Evaluation for freezing, freezing storage and distribution of frozen semen
- Why pay expensive insurance premiums if what you want is insure the genetics? Want to be able to breed while your stallion is in competition? Want to market your stallion overseas? At VRS Dr. Samper is a world authority on stallion evaluation and semen freezing and can provide a variety of freezing semen procedures as well as evaluation of frozen semen that has been processed by others. Always keep in mind that freezing semen can be done by many and preserving the fertility of sperm through freezing is only done by few.
Re-training stallions with behavioral problems
- Aggressive or hard to control stallions can be dangerous and often will ruin their life as a breeding stallions. We can help you start your stallion or deal with your already difficult to control stallion.
Training stallions to collect with an artificial vagina (on the ground or on a phantom)
- Every stallion regardless of age or previous breeding experiences can be trained to collect artificially. Patience and experience are hallmarks of what makes the staff at VRS able to help you train your stallion.
Importation of fresh or frozen semen
- We can arrange importation for particular stallions. In addition to our roster of stallions, through our contacts world wide we can inquire and arrange importation of particular stallions. Please contact us for specific needs. DO NOT BUY FROZEN SEMEN WITHOUT INQUIRING ABOUT THE STALLION'S FERTILITY WITH FROZEN SEMEN. This can save you a lot of money and headaches. |

Mare breeding soundness evaluation
- Age takes a toll on the fertility of mares, regardless of how
many foals she has had. With proper diagnostics, management and
communication we can help you decide what the best option for your
mare to try to maximize the chances of pregnancy.
Artificial
insemination with fresh, cooled or frozen semen using conventional
techniques as well as Deep uterine or endoscopic (fallopian) insemination
- Current research has shown that semen quality and timing of insemination
are the most important factors in determining pregnancy. In order
to reduce sperm transport time and sperm numbers insemination close
to the uterotubal junction has been successfully performed using
an endoscope or a flexible pipette. Maximize the use of very valuable
semen using these techniques.
Embryo
transfer, embryo freezing, shipping of embryos
- If your mare is too old, unable to maintain a pregnancy or needs
to stay in competition ET is one of the most affordable techniques.
We have years of experience in these technologies and are happy
to discuss our different package options. We can collect and ship
the embryo, transfer it into your own recipient or freeze it for
later use.
Twin
embryo reduction early as well as advanced
- Using different approaches, we are able to reduce twin pregnancies
as early as 13-14 days up to 150-180 days.
Mare
with a triplet pregnancy
- Multiple pregnancies are undesirable in the horse because most
mares will loose the foals 2-3 months before their due date.
Management
of high risk pregnancy mares
- Mare with a history of delivering early or premature foals, consistently
having problems foaling or having weak foals that die within the
first few days of life, she should be considered a high risk pregnant
mare. To maximize the chances of having a normal delivery the foaling
should be induced and attended by a professional. At VRS we can
help you and your mare carry the pregnancy and have a “normal”
delivery. We have alarm systems and staff that will monitor your
mare around the clock.
Diagnosis
and treatment of PROBLEM MARES
- This is perhaps the most challenging and frustrating aspect of
equine reproduction. There are many factors that contribute to the
sub-fertility of a mare. To obtain results hard work, commitment
form vet and owner, constant adherence to scientific principles
and management techniques will maximize the possibility of conception
and maintenance of pregnancy in problem mares. |
